Video Contest

Tthe company TravelWise Utah has an upcoming video contest. They are a part of UDOT and they have developed strategies to help ease the challenges that have occured in consequence to the large number of new developments here in Utah. In order to better promote their strategies to students they have created this video contest. The contest is a 30 second video clip showing the benefits of the company and the winner will have their video played during the BYU vs. Utah St. football at the end of the month. I was wondering how we could inform the members of the SFA so that they could have this opportunity to create a movie and pad their resume. Let me know how we can go about this. Thank you very much.

Ad Campaign

This is an opportunity to create an ad campaign for the 2012 Final Cut Film Festival. If chosen, your designs will be used to advertise the Final Cut Film Festival on BYU Campus and around the Provo area and you will win a $200 cash prize!

Your design must include:

- A logo and tagline that can be used for web, print and video such as shirts, fliers, programs and more.

- A concept for a commercial that can be realistically created by the end of Fall semester with the help of the Media Arts Students.

A very general theme that should somehow be incorporated into your campaign is “seeing the cinematic side of BYU.” Please take note that this is only a general theme that we would like to see come across in the campaign and festival as a whole and not a tagline.

Ideas will be pitched to the BYU Student Film Association near the end of October. The date and time is TBD. Pitches must be no more than 5 minutes and may include visuals such as print and video. You may work in teams, but there will be only one cash prize of $200.00 per group. Be creative in your presentation.

School is practically here! Can you believe it? It's glorious.

Don't you worry your little pants though, the Student Film Association has a lot of fun things planned for this school year. So while you're desperately trying to cram summer into these last few days by changing your hair or living in a different time zone there are a few things you should count on preparing for:

1. Be excited

Not only are you in the funnest program at BYU but also, we have the second oldest film school in the country.

2. Get Involved

If you have friends, you've probably noticed that everything works better as a team. So make some pals in the program, get out of the apartment and force yourself to work on as many projects as you can.

3. Be Open (especially to criticism)

You will encounter movies with uncomfortable messages, different personality types and criticism on your projects. Expect to learn from these experiences and it will be that much better for you.

Can't wait to see you and enjoy the ride!!

Sorry it has been a couple weeks without any updates. We have been busy planning out this next semester. We did want to let you know about a great opportunity coming up this next week. For our Thursday forum, we will be having a special faculty forum. It will be a special question and answer session with a panel of our film faculty. We will namely be discussing the topic: How can we weave our values and faith into our film professions?

The faculty has requested that we send our questions in ahead of time so they can properly prepare for the discussion. There are two ways to go about doing that:

1. Email Kyle Stapley (kyle_stapley@byu.edu) with a question. Make sure to put "Forum Question" in the subject box.

2. Send a text message containing your question to (801) 997-OTMA

Mr. Dungbeetle Re-schedule

Hey guys!

Apologies about our Mr. Dungbeetle screening falling through this last Saturday. Due to some scheduling conflict with another group for that room, we got ousted. However, the good news is that we have re-scheduled a screening for January 20th in the Varsity Theater. Keep checking back here to our blog for more updates are for sure to follow. Thanks for your patience and understanding!

On a similar note, if you are interested in purchasing a DVD, click here and express your interest. Hopes are that if we can get enough people to say they want a copy, the production company will do a limited release!

Mr. Dungbeetle Benefit Screening

Hey Guys!

We hope that you had a great Thanksgiving weekend and were able to come back to school safe. Here is a great announcement for you all. This Saturday, Dec 4th, we will be having two screenings at 7 PM and 9:15 PM of Mr. Dungbeetle, an awesome film directed by our very own Tom Russell. The screenings will be held in room 214 of the Crabtree building.

The event is being held as a benefit for Caity Smith Warner. On August 25, Caity was hit by an intoxicated driver while waiting to cross the street and broke her leg, knee, nose, and bones in her face. Admittance is free, but donations (even the smallest you can give) will be greatly appreciated and will go to help her and her husband cover medical costs. This is a great opportunity to kick off the Christmas season right! We'll see you there.

So, hopefully you all got the email from Kyle, but if not, listen up. This Thursday we will not be having a forum because we want to encourage you all to go to the Mormon Media Symposium keynote address by Terryl Givens at 11 AM. It will be up in the BYU Conference Center in room 2254.

Also, this Friday (Nov 12th), Ligiah Villalobos will be hosting a special screenwriting workshop from 9 am — 11:45 am in the MOA Auditorium. She is an award winning screenwriter for Under the Same Moon. There will also be a screening of the film at 4 pm in room 250 of the SWKT, followed by a Q&A session. Make sure to mark this event on your calendar!

Mormon Media Studies Symposium

We've got some pretty cool news for you! If you haven't heard already, BYU will be holding the Mormon Media Studies Symposium this Thursday and Friday (November 11th & 12th). This is a free event will focus on the academic study of all aspects of Mormons and the media, historically and in the present. There will be an awesome collection of speakers covering all sorts of topics. The keynote address will be this Thursday at 11 AM and the speaker will be Terryl Givens. The whole event will be held at the BYU Conference Center (the large glass building just west of the fields that are north of where DT used to be).

Are you not getting any sleep because your set designers don't have enough help? Looking for an army of willing volunteers to make your film dreams a reality? Well, we would like to help. The SFA is working on putting together a central location where filmmakers looking for a crew and film students looking for projects to work on can talk and make those things happen.

While this system is not yet up and running, we are more than willing to advertise your needed help on 419 and 319 projects with our blog and Facebook page in the meantime. If you are looking for help, just send an email to sfa.council@gmail.com with that information and we'll get it out for others to see!

Cybergate Cafe Movie Night

At 6:30 PM, Cybergate Cafe (in the same parking lot as Cafe Rio and Buy Low) will be screening several student films before playing another feature-length film. Hey folks!

So, here is our first of many updates to come your way. Like we mentioned in the last post, this semester is going to be full of great things and adventures you won’t want to miss out on. Check our blog and our Facebook group to keep updated on screenings, forums, film-making opportunities, etc. Here are some events to mark on your calendar:

Our first screening of student films will be on September 24th, Friday at 7:30pm in the Tanner Building. You can submit your films at any time by following the steps found here or by clicking on “Submission Process” under the Links bar. If you're a student and you've made something, we want to see it and, more especially, we want to screen it!

Our New Student Orientation for freshly-accepted Media Arts majors will be on Thursday, September 16th at 11am in the Museum of Art Auditorium.

SFA Presents...II!

In January, we discovered that the room we chose was not nearly big enough, but everyone who was able to cram in had a great time, despite the technical difficulties, and despite the small space. They had a great time because the films were great.

This month, we want to show you a whole new set of student films that meet that standard. And to make the whole thing even better, we've resolved the technical issues we had the first time around and even moved into a much bigger room.

Here's are the films we've selected to show this month, listed in alphabetical order:

Helen Whitney, director of the PBS documentary "The Mormons," is coming to BYU, on February 18th. Her films tend to explore issues of spirituality, including her latest film, "Forgiveness." Feel free to come and go during these screenings; most of these were made for TV with commercial breaks (or sponsorship breaks, in the case of PBS), so things tend to be presented in a chapter-esque format. That way you won't get lost, even if you show up halfway into a film.

So, here's the thing.

In order for us, the SFA, to serve you best we need you to submit us your films. I know there are loads of talented people out there who have made brill things that we all would love to see. We had a great turnout at our last one and the next one is bound to be even bigger. This is a great and easy opportunity to get your film seen by a large audience.

The easiest way for you to do this is to upload your video to vimeo and email us the link.

Work in progress? We screen rough cuts during our First Thursday Forums and then get feedback from everyone presents so we can help each other make beneficial films.

Just starting something? If you'd like to pitch an idea or are looking for a crew email us at sfa.council@gmail.com and we'll be sure to set aside some time at our next forum for you to let everyone know what you're up to.

Thank you to everyone who came to our first screening! We packed the house which was very exciting. We're working on getting a bigger venue for our next one and apologize to anyone who got turned away. We're just more popular than we knew.

Next Month plan on the 19th at 7pm. It will be just as good.

Here we go...Our first screening of the year, we are going to have some great films lined up.

Buy your tickets ($1) at the Theater and Media Arts Office in room D-581 in the HFAC (Harris Fine Arts Center). There are only 140 tickets available this month, so be quick about it.

Here's what you do.
1. Walk into the HFAC from the South side.
2. Go up the stairs.
(Here's the tricky thing...What seems like the first floor is actually the third floor. So you only have to go up two flights of stairs).
3. Walk into the office (it's on the left)
4. Ask the nice person at the desk if you can get a ticket or five to the film screening
5. Give them a dollar per ticket(s) you desire

Five easy steps...And you're there.

Oh, and then you show up at 7pm in 3380 of the Wilk this FRIDAY

Ben Brooksby and Davey Morrison
They are going to briefly discuss their films and then we will open things up for a discussion.

Film Fun For Everyone

Thank you to everyone who made it to our screening of Nocturnus!

It was a delight to watch and also to hear Nathan's critical analysis of the film. Everyone else had brilliant feedback as well. I think we all left edified.

Our next screening will be January 15th! So mark it in your calenders.

We will also be having our First Thursday Forum on the 7th where we will be screening a student film and providing feedback. 11am in the MOA auditorium.
We're going to start the new semester and year off right with some delightful films.

Hello Film Friends!!

Quick Update as we all seem to be highly busy with film making this week.

Thank you to all who attended our forum! We heard from President Petersen and met the rest of the council, as well as some inspiring words from Joel Ackerman.

We also screened Phil Goodwin's film Pyramid Scheme and had a discussion afterward that was most delightful.

Come to our First Thursday Forums! We will be watching movies and having fun. Which are things you guys can't pretend you don't like.
